This is in no way an advocacy to neglect your duties at work…but sometimes work sucks, and you have nothing to do. Also, there are many legitimate reasons to take a day off. Mine was a bit more “Ferris Bhuler.”

Once upon a time, I skipped work. This happened so long ago that you cannot hold me accountable, and I will not end up fired, as it has been 30 years in the past. Being young is sometimes a license to be a little irresponsible.

I called in sick to work one morning, which, in essence, was true; I was feeling a little green. The illness, however, was of my own making, as sometimes happens. I had a ringing hangover, and typically, as this is of my own making, I would go to work and be generally unproductive.

I have no idea what inspired me to go on a road trip on a Tuesday evening after work with no particular destination in mind. I was living in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the time, and the US border was a short distance away, long before a passport was needed to cross…I wasn’t the driver this time, so technically, I was hostage to whatever was going to happen. I thought, “ Bellingham, WA, or perhaps Point Roberts, WA,” for a couple of beers and be home by midnight at the latest.
