Retirement! A License to Do Nothing?
My Mother-In-Law has Become A Disaster Zone Since She Retired
Working for the government is not an easy job, not the type of job that most that have never worked for the government would realize anyway. When my Mother-in-Law retired with a government pension, I don’t think she had any plan, and she hasn’t done anything other than complain about everything since she retired. She is very focused on money, even though she has an indexed to inflation defined benefit pension, the kind that nobody has anymore, the kind that will never run out of money, the kind that will always pay the bills and leave something left over.
She has not enjoyed her retirement. That has been impacted by COVID and Lock-downs, where she lives she was in a bubble on an island, and she could not leave without significant quarantine on return so for nearly three years so she stayed put near home, she has been retired for about 5 years.
We have tired to suggest things for her to do, and she shuts down all of them. Pretty much the only thing she wants do so is walk on her beach near her home. Now her husband, is very social but also a bit of a hermit, doesn’t like to live near people, but is very friendly in their cottage community that they live in year round, but he is happiest when they all leave at the end of the season.
