This is a great article, I think the couple is just struggling with the fact that they have all of their money committed and while it might seem like they don’t have a lot of wiggle room, going $3k/month in the hole, they are doing very well. It’s all a matter of perspective.

We all make choices on our spending. A while back I read a story about two people, one was a person who worked as a secretary her whole life, she owned a home and when she died had a couple of million in the bank but never made more than about $27,000/year. The other person earned several hundred thousands per year and died bankrupt, and in fact had gone bankrupt a couple of times in his life.
