This is an interesting perspective and you are right that you have the support of your boss...how much of this support is becasue you are a woman.

I would like to share a male perspective on trying to share parental responsability. It has been completely unsupported by any employer I have had in the past decade, even though some aspects such as parental leave (in Canada) are supported in law, my employer still tried to deny me legally mandated leave.

In the end I took the leave, and was peanalized by the company so harshly that I had no choice to leave. In every other company that I have worked for since, taking time off of work when a kid has had to stay home from school because they were sick or take them to doctor's appontemtns has been met with the attitued from my boss and even female co-workers as " You need to be here! Why can't your wife take care of this!" type of attitued.

Most workplaces still don't care how much "Men Deliver" they want to see the whites of your eyes, or your just another slacker on the payroll to be downsized the next time there is a budget cut. While your husband is gunning for a promotion, in the end it might be his employers stance that they support family time in name only, but the reality is if he dosn't put in the meaningless time on vacation, he may be the next one on the chopping block.

My wife earns more than I do, and thank god she does, we have had a wage reversal over the years, hers up and mine down, and some of my wage decreas has been due to our committment to share our parenting equally, that has not been supported by those that I have worked for. Thankfully, my wife has stood by me through this committment to her, her career woudn't be where it is if she had to take all of the childcare on. But she still get support from her workplace for childcare needs that have produced a lot of conflict for me in my workplace relationship, even though I usually worked form home online and 90% of my job can be done from home easily while doing childcare duties. Most small and many medium and large businesses are still pretty old school in male supporing parents.
